Crossing Strangers "Untitled 5"

by Andile Buka

Crossing Strangers marks Johannesburg based photographer Andile Buka's first published body of work. Born and raised in Orange Farm, Andile Buka's Crossing Strangers is a photo book that explores the landscape of Johannesburg, the people who both inhabit and fill its city streets. It is a visual reflection of a personal engagement with both the city's past and current landscape. The book captures chance encounters, more specifically through black and white photographs shot on the streets of Johannesburg. There’s a touch of romance to encountering unknown people in a faraway place and Buka’s poignant portraits brought out a sense of wanderlust from within. Ben Davis, National Art Critic, Artnet

Andile Buka - (b.1990) Soweto. Johannesburg. Currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Daring and driven by the need to create, Andile is a self-taught Johannesburg based photographer. He describes his photography as documentary portraiture work. His distinct and honest documentation of street style has gained him local and international acclaim. His work has been exhibited in South Africa, Germany, Nigeria, UK, Italy and the US.

Andile’s work is a conduit for storytelling as he navigates different spaces and life. He spends his days on his bicycle drifting through the city, hunting for interesting people and places to photograph.

In 2015, he showed at the 18th Internationale Schillertage Festival (Mannheim, Germany) and the Lagos Photo Festival. In 2016, he participated in two group exhibitions, Fashion Cities Africa at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery (UK) and Find Us On The Map at Rush Arts Gallery (New York).

In 2015, Andile published his first photo book titled Crossing Strangers, a two-year body of work, which was launched and exhibited at the International Tokyo Book Fair. The book is a portrait of Johannesburg, documenting the people and places of the City of Gold. Most recently, he was selected as one of Adobe's 10 Rising Stars in photography internationally and was invited to participate in the New York Times Portfolio Review. The event, run by the New York Times, selects 150 photographers from thousands of submissions from all over the world. These emerging photographers are then connected with 75 of the most influential editors, curators, and gallerists for two days of free one on one consultations.
