Art of Giving

Every year artfull’s founder, Kholisa Thomas, supports education through her collaboration with the artists she works with supporting the following organisations.

Ubuntu Pathways, Zwide Port Elizabeth

Ubuntu Pathways breaks the cycle of poverty through pioneering an integrated support system of health, education, and household stability in the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Ubuntu creates an individualised pathway out of poverty, from a child’s first steps to their first job.

Along with other members of the Ubuntu Pathways Board, Kholisa Thomas co-chairs the Johannesburg fundraising gala which brings together South Africa’s greatest musicians and artists to raise funds for the organisation.

Mucisians such as Hugh Masekela, Unathi Nkayi, Freshly Ground and visual artists such as Nelson Makamo, Sam Nhlengethwa, Zwelethu Machepha, Andile Buka and Siphiwe Mhlambi have donated artwork to be auctioned on the night to raise funds for Ubuntu.

Kgololo Academy, Alexandra Johannesburg

Kgololo Academy is a pre-grade R-12 private, university preparatory school located in Alexandra Township where the average annual income is R35,000 ($3000 US), and where less than 13% of the students who finish high school qualify to pursue a university degree.

Kgololo Academy believes that each child can accomplish just as much as a child from the most affluent community if they have access to a high quality education and equipped with the habits and skills needed to succeed in university and in life. Kgololo Academy aims to serve as a model of excellence in South Africa, providing students from low-income communities with an exemplary, university preparatory education.

Kholisa joined Kgololo Academy in its founding year and still serves on its main board. Using her relationship with artists she fundraises for the school through art auctions at their annual Thanks Giving Fundraising Dinner and through collaborating with artist to give of their time teaching art to Kgololo scholars through their art program.
